20 Abu Sayyaf Patay Sa Bakbakan Ng Mga Militar sa Sulu

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- At least 20 members of the Abu Sayyaf group were killed in a series of military operations in Sulu, the Western Mindanao Command reported on Sunday.
Spokesperson Capt. Joan Petinglay said the latest encounter was with the 64th Marine Company in Barangay Lumipad, Talipao, Maimbung Sulu early Sunday morning, where 4 bodies of suspected bandits were recovered, along with 7 high-powered firearms.
The forces’ operations are calculated, according to Petinglay, considering that at least 25 foreigners and 6 Filipinos are still held captive by the armed group. But there are no reports yet of their sightings since operations are still ongoing.
Petinglay considers the death of the Abu Sayyaf members a blow to the group’s operations, citing the bandits' inability to establish lairs as they are on the run due to ongoing pursuit operations.
“Tuloy-tuloy po ito (this will be continuous) and we are hoping and asking for the cooperation of the residents,” she said.
Petinglay said 5 soldiers will have to be airlifted to Manila to receive further medical attention, while at least 24 soldiers, who were injured, mostly with bruises and shrapnel wounds, will go back to their assignments and continue to help in the operations against the Abu Sayyaf.
Meanwhile, Petinglay said a separate joint operation is also being conducted by the military and the Philippine National Police in Siocon, Zamboanga del Norte to possibly recover an elderly couple who were snatched by armed men from their home in Barangay Sta. Maria last Friday night.
Investigation is still ongoing to determine the identity and motive of the suspects in the incident.
