9 Abu Sayyaf Patay Nakipagbakbakan sa Marines

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — A clash between Marines and Abu Sayyaf members in Maimbung, Sulu has left nine militants dead and 15 others wounded.

The Abu Sayyaf casualties are a result of a pursuit operation  launched by the Marine Special Operations Group (MARSOG) under the 64th Marine Company since dawn on Sunday.

Among those killed in the encounter at Barangay Ipil, Maimbung town were wives of Abu Sayyaf sub-leaders Jihad Idang Susukan and Aktar Susukan.

According to reports from the Army's 501st Infantry Brigade, at least 15 other Abu Sayyaf members were wounded but managed to escape.

MARSOG initially attacked the Abu Sayyaf group about 4:30a.m on Sunday. Four militants were killed in the attack and the Marines recovered seven high-powered guns left behind by the fleeing Abu Sayyaf fighters.

The military said pursuit operations continue against Susukan's group.

Col. Cirilito Sobejana, commander of Joint Task Force Sulu, could not immediately provide details of the ongoing operation.

Military offensives in the last two weeks have already left 24 Abu Sayyaf dead and 21 wounded.

At least 28 soldiers have also been wounded. Most of the injuries were minor caused by indirect blasts from M203 rifle grenades fired by the Abu Sayyaf group.
