LOOK: Russia Offers Help in Bataan Nuclear Plant Rehabilitation

The Russian government has offered to help the Philippines in rehabilitating the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant if the latter decide to use the decades-old facility, Russia Today report said.

On Wednesday, Russia’s Nuclear Energy Minister Igor Slavenko said Russia and the Philippines are currently discussing about the possibility of rehabilitating the Bataan facility.

The Department of Energy (DOE) said earlier that the nuclear plant would need more than 2 years of inspection and more than 1 billion US dollar fund to operate the plant.

Slavenko said Russian nuclear experts can give full assessment in six months.

The Kremlin also offered US500-million loan assistance intended for the facility, and 75 nuclear experts within the first 5 years of its operation.

Since the Chernobyl disaster in 1980, Russia’s nuclear power plants have been upgraded into the latest technology. Russia operates more than 60 nuclear power plants.

President Rodrigo Duterte hinted earlier that he may consult both the Congress and the Senate if it is possible to use the dormant Bataan Nuclear Plant.

The plant was built by the United States during the time of President Marcos, but his successor – Pres. Corazon Aquino scrapped the plan to operate the facility indefinitely.
