Duterte's P300M Expenses of Travel, Returns $35M in Return Are Worth of Expenses

Communications Secretary Martin Andanar has downplayed the humongous costs incurred by President Rodrigo Duterte for his official trips in his first year in office, saying they have resulted in tinvestment and aid pledges.

In an interview over dzMM radio Tuesday (June 27), Andanar urged the public to look at the “ROI” or return of investment of Duterte’s trips.

“Totoo naman na most traveled [president si Duterte]. Totoo rin naman na nagastos ay mahigit P300 million na sa mahigit 21 biyahe. Pero ang mahalaga dito, tingnan natin iyung cost benefit analysis natin, iyung ROI,” he said.
“Kahit umabot iyan (gastos) ng P400 million, kung ang balik naman ay $35 billion, napakalayo po. Napakaganda ng return on investment,” Andanar added.

Duterte has gone on 21 trips since assuming office on June 30 last year, mostly to Southeast Asian nations and countries in the Middle East. He has also traveled to China and Japan.

Andanar said part of the investment pledges Duterte secured in his travels will be used to fund the administration’s big-ticket infrastructure projects such as the Manila-Clark railway project and Mindanao Railway project.

The President’s trips also strengthened the country’s ties with other countries, he added.
“Hindi mo mabibigyan halaga ang relationship na na-build mo sa mga bansang napuntahan mo,” Andanar said.
